European citizens have elected their new Parliament. What comes next for older persons?


The campaign’s dust of the European election is just settling and voters have decided who will represent them for the five years to come in the Strasbourg and Brussels hemicycles. The new European Parliament is more diverse than before, with  shifts away from traditional parties, the emergence of smaller parties and, as a result of UK’s participation in the elections, a consolidation of a strongly euro-sceptic wing. This is a time where older persons’ organisations should reach out to their new representatives and ensure that decisions ‘about us’ are not taken ‘without us’.

In the hour before the announcement of the results of the EP elections on 26 May, AGE’s Policy Officer Philippe Seidel was invited by the European students’ organisation AEGEE to discuss about participation in elections with younger people on the Esplanade of the European Parliament in Brussels.

Medicines shortages: causes urgently need to be identified, warn health advocates

Together with 30 other organisations, AGE co-signed a letter requesting the European Commission to investigate the worrying issue of medicines shortages in EU hospitals.

The European Social Fund, Life-Long learning & active ageing: how do they fit together? 
On 21 May, AGE moderated a workshop of the European Social Fund’s Transnational Platform that focused on learning for active and healthy ageing. Successful EU-funded practices and a reflection on how to better reach out to older learners were on the agenda.

AGE highlights older persons' concerns on poverty & exclusion to EU Presidency & Commission 
AGE was invited at a roundtable discussion with Romanian Permanent Representations and the European Commission on the European Pillar of Social Rights and the European Semester. We highlighted the challenges faced by older people in Europe, specifically older women, and shared AGE's analysis of the Country Reports 2019.

The fourth edition of the Annual Convention in Brussels on 20 May 2019 focused on the future of Social Europe. AGE was invited to speak on investment in the social service workforce and on access to financial services.

A look at age-friendly environments in Poland
In May AGE participated in the meeting of one of the action groups of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing in Krakow, Poland. This was the opportunity to meet with different stakeholders and to better understand the dynamic in Poland around age-friendly environments.

ILC reports on health inequalities among older LGBT people in the UK
In May 2019 the International Longevity Centre UK (ILC) published new research findings that provides further evidence of the differential treatment experienced by LGBTI as they age and its impact on their health and wellbeing. It also explores the implications of this research for policy and practice.

Strategic priorities of the EU by 2025: the Sibiu Declaration sets the frame
On 9 May, Europe Day, the 27 Heads of State and Government of the European Union met informally in Sibiu (Romania) with the clear objective of reaffirming the unity of the EU. At the end of the Summit, the leaders adopted the so-called Sibiu Declaration, built around 10 commitments that will guide the Union's future actions.

Thereby reflecting the wish of 70% Europeans.

Age discrimination in access to services and goods: a first insight into the EuroAgeism project
The EuroAgeism project gathers 15 young researchers whose objective is to explore the concept of ageism from different perspectives. One of these researchers, hosted by AGE, studies how the existence or absence of national legislation to prevent age discrimination in access to goods and services actually influences how older adults experience ageism.

Ageism is becoming a major topic in gerontological research
From 23rd to 26th May, one of the biggest European gerontological conferences took place in Gothenburg, Sweden. Over the course of three days about 1650 scientists and practitioners from all over the globe participated in the conference.

International conference on 'Inclusiveness in an ageing society' - call for papers - Updated
Organized in France on 4–6 February 2020, the conference will discuss processes of exclusion or integration in the implementation of public policies, and in daily interactions between older people and their environment. Proposals for papers can be submitted until 15 June.
